Review- MG Wing-01 Gundam

22/04/2012 by bd77

Finally, my first (maybe only) MG kit review, the MG Wing-01 Gundam, courtesy of GK Gundam Kit.

He has his sensor-lock on you.

This is a revision of the original 1/100 HG Wing-01 released in the mid 90′s with MG engineering and modern construction. The Wing-01 is a toned-down version of the monster called Wing-O, with no ZERO system installed and a battery/capacitor-based buster rifle.

Front profile shot.

In the mid 90′s, having a glass-covered torso was the rage for the Alternate Universe (AU) Gundams series, and the Wing-01 is no exception. The green-coloured orb in the upper torso is the Sensor-eye, an enhance sensor suite to complement the existing ones on the head unit. Other Gundam series in the mid 90′s with glass-covered torso: G Gundam (Hyper-mode), Gundam X/ X Divider and Gundam Double X.

Right-side profile.

Living up to its name, the Wing-01 has a a pair of massive wings, which can be move about according to situations.

Rear profile shot.

Unlike the Steroid-enhanced/backpack-complex of a certain Gundam series *cough*Seed*cough*, the Wing-01 has a very minimalist backpack, which is quite functional.

Left-side profile.

The shield here is very integral for it’s alternate mode, called Bird-mode (it says so on the box and the manual).

    I haven’t build this one, looks promising….

    Where’s the Omake??

    • on 22/04/2012 at 8:45 pm bd77

      Very worth the effort.
Ah, omake… ehh… my MG C1 is still in storage.
      >.<

One does not simply fly off without effect parts XD

    • on 23/04/2012 at 11:01 am bd77

Yes, effect parts makes crashes more GLORIOUS.

Ahh nice build there, it’s such a simple and clean design but still gorgeous cause of the vibrant wings. =D And it was kind of crazy what Rrobbert did with his HG Wing..man old kits don’t deserved to be trashed like that..=(

    • on 23/04/2012 at 11:16 am bd77

The clean and simple design why I chose this. =)

At least RRobbert didn’t do an ACTUAL mission failed sequence by nuking up the kit.
(that would probably shook up the neighbours XD)

      • on 23/04/2012 at 11:27 am 赤信号

HAHAHA and probably get banned from Youtube for teaching people how to nuke stuff. XD

      • on 23/04/2012 at 11:39 am bd77

        Bingo~

  4. on 23/04/2012 at 11:55 am hiroy_raind

“You can try to asked any surviving OZ MS pilots that.”
    There was any? O_o
I mean, even the normal Buster Rifle can blow stuff that aren’t touching the beam but still close enough. LOL

    • on 23/04/2012 at 11:58 am bd77

That was the point, there ain’t any. XD

The Buster Rifle, leveling the battlefield in short notice.

      • on 23/04/2012 at 2:58 pm hiroy_raind

Forgot to ask, does the wings result in any kind of back-heavyness? (I expect at least less than the SEED kits).

      • on 23/04/2012 at 3:47 pm bd77

The wings here did not give as much trouble as with SEED units, they’re not so heavy and weight are spread out.

  5. on 23/04/2012 at 12:42 pm darkandchoco

makes me want to buy a wing gundam, i haven’t had one yet.. =3

    • on 23/04/2012 at 12:48 pm bd77

Please do. A flexible yet sturdy frame, no excessive accessories and clean makes it a good choice.

Heero and Setsuna’s first meeting in Super Robot Wars Z2.1
(the main highlight here is Setsuna)
    Heero: …
    Setsuna: …
Super Robot Wars Z 2.2 Ending
Heero: Setsuna, you are a Gundam.
Setsuna: You are too, you’ve battled and defeated Gundam.
    Heero: You surpassed Gundam.
Setsuna: Thank you, that is the greatest compliment I can receive.

    • on 23/04/2012 at 5:42 pm Nightslash3535

And it’s not actually called Wing-01 Gundam by OZ pilots, but rather Gundam Zero-One, being the first Gundam in the lineup, followed by Gundam “Deathscythe” Zero-Two, Gundam “Heavyarms” Zero-Three, Gundam “Sandrock” Zero-Four and Gundam “Shenlong” Zero-Five.

      • on 24/04/2012 at 12:39 pm bd77

Wish I could say the same, but, the name already stated on the box and manual so… Yeah.

      Me like this. :)

Oh I remember that overpowered rifle able to shoot through even bunkers! Oh I had forgotten the Wing transformed, nifty! Ah it has really great articulation. Recently I’ve gotten a greater appreciation for model kits since I build one myself :p.

    • on 25/04/2012 at 12:05 am bd77

Those days, the Buster rifle is something to be fear of, nowadays… guns like that is nothing… special. As most of the lead units’ guns can do the same.
Since Wing is a long-distanced assault unit, transformation is a must and yes, the articulation is very good and stable.

      • on 25/04/2012 at 11:51 pm Nightslash3535

The Buster Rifle is still pretty hax when you use it right, use Buster Rifle MAP Attack+Cast Valor to dish out 5-digit damage on multiple grunts in SRW.
Watch a clip of Wing Zero’s Rolling Twin Buster Rifle (and by extension, GX’s Satellite Cannon) and prove me right.

      • on 26/04/2012 at 12:20 am bd77

The Buster rifle, good for wiping the floor of enemies.

Ah, the good ol’ Wing Gundam, the very first Gundam that I was in love with. Sadly that love was washed away by seed of all things. Mostly because unlike the Wing boys who tanked everything Kira actually did stuff in battle.

That’s why I loved the battles between Zechs and Heero, were the Gundam abilities where showcased nicely.

As for the kit, it is nice of Bandai to re-release stuff from something other than the UC shows with modern design improvements. From the looks of it they are doing the five Gundams at least. I wonder if they will do other things like the grunt suits and the Tallgeese.

I thought you had other MG kits, I thought the Rezel was a MG. I guess he is just big compared to the other grunts.

    • on 25/04/2012 at 12:15 am bd77

Seed was so-so to me as the storyline, well, kind of reenactment of the original Gundam.

Ah, the duel of two men in their Gundams while each upholding their ideals. Gotta love their duels. =)

This is a BIG improvement over the 1/100 HG kit that I first saw decades ago and wanting to buy. Glad I didn’t. =)
There’s a rumour going on that the MG TallGeese will see the light of day by this year’s end. (Bandai, MAKE HGAC LEOS ALREADY!! GIT!)

Ehhh… to be perfectly honest, this IS my very first MG that I’ve made.
Do note, the late UC (circa UC0089 to UC0100) MS are on the large side. And my ReZEL is a HG kit. lol.

      • on 25/04/2012 at 12:33 am Nightslash3535

Actually, SEED is a masterpiece in terms of storyline. SEED Destiy on the other hand *spoiler*…

      • on 25/04/2012 at 12:36 am bd77

Oh God… Destinyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy~ *stabs own head*

  9. on 28/04/2012 at 5:37 pm Q

“You can try to asked any surviving OZ MS pilots that”. I lol’ed.

Apparently MG Wing Gundam is a small throwback to the older style MGs compared to other recent MGs that were released around the same time as him. Nothing too fancy, but doesn’t fix what’s good already.

I somehow was looking forward to see a self-destruction scene of Wing XD

    • on 29/04/2012 at 11:26 am bd77

This is my first MG build so I have *no clue on what was changed really. :/

MG kits are a pain to put into proper quick poses… orz

*edited, forgot to type in. orz

NICE! doumo arigatou-desu, you’ve just convinced me to buy this gunpla! I’ve got my eyes on this model for sooo long, just waiting for the sign! ;) those super-powered laser rifles sure capture me on the spot!

    • on 01/05/2012 at 7:16 am bd77

This is a classic design with modern engineering. And happy with it.
The buster rifle pretty functional, too.

      • on 01/05/2012 at 1:44 pm amaruro72

Nicely done! Now, how bout’ an Outdoor photo shoot? :D

      • on 02/05/2012 at 10:40 pm bd77

I’ll pass. I have an easier time with 1/144 series.

  11. on 06/05/2012 at 12:05 pm lionheart23

the shield and rifle is better than wing zero ver.ka ><llllll

    • on 06/05/2012 at 12:13 pm bd77

      Well of course. :)
That’s another reason why I choose this kit.
